I love bodybuilding; I hate diet culture. How do I square that circle? How can I connect with a culture that is all about totally superficial, physical features while abhorring societal norms that narrowly define acceptable bodies? My discussion of the strategies and philosophies of bodybuilding prep diets can give you a window into how I personally choose to find a balance between these two seeming opposites. I can love a sport without it being right for me and without defining anyone else’s success against it. We aren’t all bodybuilders, and we shouldn’t all be modeling our behaviors after what’s required to step on stage.
